Equanimity

Hasmita Shah, 2016

There was much excitement and some trepidation

As the delivery van neared its destination

It finally arrived amidst a furore of anticipation

And then it was full blown euphoria and elation

We were in the middle of a ladies lunch

And all of a sudden we had a hunch

To capture the moment for posterity

A photo of the book and me

I was suddenly overcome with a bucket load of emotion

As it dawned on me that I’d finally achieved my ambition

Individually shrink wrapped and a cover with a thoughtful design

I was so proud of my creation, but was this the sign?

As they say pride comes before a fall

And I realised life had thrown me a curveball

When I reverently opened the book

To sign it and take a closer look

I was disappointed, the binding was creased

My mind was reeling, how could this be fixed

A call to the printers was all it took

A total recall of all the books

And so we have to wait a little longer

I’d waited 8 years, I just have to be stronger

And at this time my parents’ advice comes to mind

They were always so wise, thoughtful and kind

They said, in times of happiness don’t get elated

And in times of sorrow, don’t get dejected

Accept all situations with equanimity

And life will not be a calamity
